The 5 P’s
After the quality standard has been established, the most important step toward its achievement is the selection of the best process and procedures. By giving attention to the five Ps, weld quality will come about almost automatically, reducing subsequent inspection to a routine checking and policing activity. The five Ps are:
NDT
Visual inspection while work is in progress
Visual inspection will begin before the first arc is struck. The materials will be examined to see if they meet specifications for quality, type, size, cleanliness, and freedom from defects. Foreign matter--grease, paint, oil, oxide film, heavy scale that could be detrimental to the weld should be removed. Alignment and fit of parts and the fixtures will be inspected, Joint preparation will be checked.
This early inspection will be a significant factor in weld quality.
Visual inspection after welding
The objective of visual inspection here is not only to seek defects not permissible under the quality standard, but also to check for distortion in the fabrication.
MPI (Magnetic Particle Inspection)
Will used for the detection of surface and sub-surface defects in ferrous materials. They make use of an externally applied magnetic field or electric current through the material, and the principle that the magnetic flux will leave the part at the area of the flaw.
DPI (Dye Penetrant Inspection)
Also called liquid penetrant inspection (LPI), will be used to locate surface-breaking defects. DPI may be applied to all non-ferrous materials, but for inspection of ferrous components MPI is preferred for its subsurface detection capability. LPI is used to detect casting and forging defects, cracks, and leaks in new products, and fatigue cracks on in-service components.
Radiography
Is used to detect internal flaws in welds, the radiographic film gives a permanent record of the results.
Ultrasonics
Generally used for detecting defects in plate 10mm and above and the preferred method for detecting planar defects.
Calibration
All welding sets are calibrated to BS7570 the Code of Practice for Validation of Welding Sets.
